Palazzo della Ragione
Palazzo della Ragione is a majestic building located between the charming Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori, and has always been the pulsing heart of Verona. In the cities governed by the Venetian Republic there was always the seat of the Court where disputes were judged.
Inside the building there is the attractive old market courtyard or Cortile del Mercato Vecchio which in the 15th century hosted the grain market. In this fascinating area which is the best preserved in the complex, reigns a typically medieval atmosphere. It is enriched further by the staircase Scala della Ragione, a late Gothic gem of rare beauty, built in pink Veronese marble.
The Palazzo della Ragione is normally inserted in the guided tour itinerary of Verona that illustrates the characteristic and fascinating Romanic style with alternating layers of stone and brick.
The building moreover hosts a small notary chapel called Cappella dei Notai where most probably lovers held their wedding rites, in a special, intimate and romantic atmosphere.
